E! Update: Tatum O’Neal, Kung Fu Panda, Dancing Dog
Posted on June 2, 2008
Actress Tatum O’Neal, who wrote about her struggle with drug addiction in the 2005 autobiography, A Paper Life, has been arrested after buying crack cocaine near her Manhattan home. Publisher’s Weekly said this about the memoir: ‘Much of the book’s second half covers her fraught marriage to volatile tennis champ John McEnroe; these passages alternate between recollections of the pleasure of being in love and having children and the pain of living with McEnroe, whom she depicts as controlling and demeaning… She also zips through her recovery, abruptly claiming “rebirth” in the final chapter.’ Used copies of A Paper Life are available at Amazon.com. Going cheap.
Early reviews for the upcoming animated film, Kung Fu Panda, have been good. The Hollywood Reporter writes: ‘Though aimed primarily at youngsters, KF Panda embraces humor that plays well across age groups and nationalities. Certainly the sustained applause at its Palais debut here in Cannes bodes well for international box office success.’ Groucho Reviews notes: ‘DreamWorks Animation’s latest has the right stuff to make audiences laugh but also care about the film’s characters.’
This is amazing. If you’ve ever wanted to see a dog dancing on its hind legs - backwards - check out this clip from Britain’s Got Talent 2008. Judge Simon Cowell is stunned, and the audience gives this pooch a standing ovation!

The New and Improved Andromeda Strain
Posted on May 23, 2008
Early reviews for A&E’s updated version of Michael Crichton’s Sci-Fi thriller The Andromeda Strain have been mixed - but the Los Angeles Times reports that there’s some buzz about possible Emmy nominations.
The decades-old bestseller was made into an intriguing 1971 film by Oscar winner Robert Wise. The new mini-series, stretched to four hours, is produced by Hollywood heavies Ridley and Tony Scott, and stars Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order), Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) and Rick Schroder (NYPD Blue). In this re-telling of the story Schroder portrays a gay soldier, a character that wasn’t included in the 1969 novel. The main stream media hasn’t given that aspect of the production much play, but there’s an interesting write-up about it on AfterElton.com, complete with comments by scriptwriter Robert Schenkkan. Rumor has it that Crichton’s original ending, which left some readers scratching their heads, has been clarified. The storyline involves deadly pathogens unleashed on a small town in Utah, after the satellite carrying them falls to earth. The mini-series airs on A&E May 26 and 27, from 9-11PM ET.
We’ll be watching.

Why We Love Kyra Sedgwick
Posted on May 13, 2008
In TNT’s The Closer, Ms Sedgwick chews the scenery as Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson - and it’s a satisfying feast for viewers. Her rubbery face, snappy lines, and that impossible Southern drawl keep us enthralled in this enjoyable crime drama. The Golden Globe winner is happily married to actor Kevin Bacon and is related to the late Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol’s infamous underground film star.
The Closer, which was put on hiatus during the recent writers’ strike, will be returning to television in July.
Thank yew!

John McCain will live - for 100 Years!
Posted on May 13, 2008
We wondered how long it would be before the McCain camp dragged out his 96-year-old mother to illustrate the Republican candidate’s longevity genes. (Not very long, it seems. The GOP unleashed this mildly disturbing ad on Mother’s Day.) And what’s with the Walt Disney music in the background? I kept waiting for woodland creatures to appear and start cleaning the living room.

Reputation Makeovers
Posted on May 9, 2008
Attempting to tone down her party girl image, Lindsay Lohan will appear on the May 22 season finale of Ugly Betty - and then return for five new episodes in the fall. Hey, it worked for Britney Spears! The Denver Post’s Joanne Ostrow writes: “The Britney Spears rehabilitation tour continues… when the troubled 26-year-old pop star has her second make-nice gig on CBS’s How I Met Your Mother. Britney’s people called CBS’s people to set up the first cameo. Because the ratings proved positive — an extra 1 million people watched — she’s back as the dermatologist’s receptionist, intent on demonstrating she’s stable enough to handle the rigors of TV comedy. The sight of Spears delivering lines without a meltdown apparently goes a long way toward undoing the damage she did her career during last year’s MTV Video Awards.”
On Ugly Betty, Ms. Lohan will play a mean girl from Betty’s high school days who resurfaces to wreck havoc on the bespeckled one’s life. Executive producer Silvio Horta has reportedly said, “Lindsay was terrific - a real pleasure. She came in early and was very pleasant.”
Color her humble.

Why We Love Cirie Fields
Posted on May 8, 2008
In what’s probably the most entertaining Survivor season to date, Cirie is one of the craftiest contestants we’ve seen on the show. Her infectious laugh and droll observations make us feel like we’ve known her forever. When she’s not happily dishing her tribemates or swimming underwater to collect puzzle pieces, Ms. Fields works as a nurse in her home state of New Jersey. Please, CBS, please give this woman her own show!
(Our prediction: If Amanda is voted off this week, Cirie will ultimately win the game.)
